Alice Ivers was born in 1851. She was introduced to poker through her first husband Frank Duffield. Alice would watch his games and pick up the skills that were involved in playing. Frank died is an accident. In order to support herself financially, Alice turned to poker.
Alice was an attractive and respectable woman and caused quite a stir in the poker world. She would spend her winnings on the latest fashions from New York so that she would have new dresses to wear for her next games. The casinos did actually like Alice as she did have strong religious values including that on Sunday you should not gamble.
Even though she was proper and held onto her religious beliefs, Alice proved to be a match for the men. She actually would carry a gun around with her and was known for smoking a lot.
Alice married again. This came about when she defended a fellow dealer. Warren Tubbs was threatened by a gambler that had a knife. Alice drew her gun and became the hero.
Alice soon became infamous in poker and her winnings increases. It has been said that she would make up to $6000 in just a single night. Over the course of her career she claimed that she won $250 000 which in today’s money is about $3 million.
Alice even had a connection to the outlaw Jesse James. Alice worked at a casino that was owned by Bob Ford, who set out to kill Jesse James through a single shot in the back of the head.
Alice went on to open Pokers Palace using some of her winnings. Downstairs offered gambling liquor whilst upstairs was a brothel that Alice ran.
Even though the business that she was in, Alice still stuck to her religious beliefs and would not open her saloon on a Sunday. Her rule though led to a situation. A group of drunken soldiers rebelled against her rule, which in turn caused Alice to use her shotgun where she killed one and injured another.
Alice then spent a short time in jail because of this and pleaded self-defense. She had actually been arrested before this a few times for offences that were related to gambling, drunkenness, running a brothel and bootlegging. She avoided being sent to jail though as she was granted a pardon for old age. She 77 at the time and two years later she died in 1930 at age 79.
